Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) shares the same designer as San Diego's famed Torrey Pines, William F. Bell. Although not as challenging as Bell's more famous design, this championship course still offers an enjoyable round for players of all skill levels. The golf course is mostly flat with wide, tree-lined fairways and elevated greens. There are generous landing areas that make Grand Canyon University Golf Course player friendly, but sand bunkers flanking nearly all of the greens guarantee a challenge. The layout features frequent doglegs that bend in both directions and large greens that slope from back to front. Water hazards also come into play on seven holes.

I have played this course hundreds of times, when it was Maryvale. It is now a different course...and for the better! You would be hard pressed to find better greens anywhere in valley. This time of year (August), the superintendent is just trying to keep the greens "alive", GCU deserves "two thumbs up" as these greens are quick, true, and will "hold". They have added a ton of bunkers, not only around the greens, but in the fairways also, demanding some strategy prior to "gripping and ripping". Treat yourself and play this course, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the restaurant/bar is superb.

We played it yesterday. April 20th. I have played this course many times when was the old merryvale. This was the first time with the new design. Wow what a change, is a real challenge now. I think they went a little overboard with the fairway bunkers. Almost unfair. On some holes you can drive long and straight down what should be middle of the fairway, and still be punished. Fairway bunkers should be on sides of the fairway.some holes punish what should be a great or good drive. The greens will not hold a ball so if you hit over the bunkers protecting the greens and land on the green your still punished as the ball will run off and chances are into another bunker. I will go back and the course is in void shape and is real sand in the bunkers. Not normal hard as brick bunkers like cave creek. But over all I think they went overboard on fairway. Bunkers.
