Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.

The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

A little slow but worth it

Over seeded recently so greens a little long and slow. Got backed up on the back 9 and pace pretty slow. All in all course is looking good and well worth the $33. Driving range was closed and will open again on 10/6.

course just overseeded

The course showed it will be in great shape after the fairways are cut. The course just completed its overseeding and was in the process of its first cutting. It was cart path only. Can't wait to play there again in 2 weeks.

Good course, Good deal, wrong day.

Course is very nice, tough to play without GPS or course book. Was hot and grassy due to overseeding. Good pace of play, finished round in roughly 3 hours.

Over seeding

Course was just seeded and it was cart path only. This was not identified when I obtained the time on golfnow.
Also the grass in fairways was long and at times it was difficult to locate the ball.

fair for 'driver'

some tucson courses are very punishing for somewhat bad drives; this course was reasonable in that area. Thus I will pay it again.

Tough

Course was in good shape except for some greens had rough spots. Not a good course for marginal golfer as lots of long carries and balls are likely lost if off fairway or first rough

Dress Code Ruins a Nice Day of Golf

My friend brought a collared shirt that was sleeveless...you know...just like the ones ladies wear when they golf...like the one's they sell in the Pro Shop for $70+. But since he's a guy I guess you're not allowed to be comfortable in the desert heat. So I had to pay for my friends new golf shirt just to get out and play. That would be ok if I was made of money but I'm not. Golf needs to lighten up. It's a sport, not a cocktail party, or a wedding.

Sheesh....

Much Improved

My wife and I checked out this course after reading about the fact that it is now under new ownership and management. The course has always been a very challenging (in a good way) course. Great variety in the types of challenges and beautiful scenery. what's changed is the staff and the facility upkeep is now first rate.
It is now one of Tucson's best public courses.

Top Dressed Greens

First, staff was great! Pro shop, starter, course marshal were all very friendly. Unhappy that the greens had just been "punched" and top dressed with sand. NO mention of this by any of the staff. They also did not have the "A!"....arification alert on GolfNow.

Disappointed

Played this course for years (before all the finical problems) as it is within walking distance from our home. Every one has been telling us what great shape it is in now, so when a friend suggested we play it, we were in.
Very slow play because of a group that they had playing that were taking two and three shots each and playing the wrong tee boxes.
Called the club house when the group in front of us had three holes open in front of them. Nothing! They said they would send some out which they never did.
Staff very opologetic after 5 hour round, but know it will not go to management. Not the way to run a golf course if you want repeat business. They lost us once, and now for another 4 or 5 years.

Vistoso

The staff was fantastic, some of the most friendly I have come across. GPS on the cart would have been a plus, not having played there before there were a number of holes that we couldn't figure out from the tee box. Overall very nice though.

My favorite course in Arizona

Through all thr difficulties The course conditions at Vistoso have improved and it's the best value in all of Arizona. The combination of desert remoteness and cultivated landscape create an almost perfect venue. Not the most challenging course in Tucson but an enjoyable layout with a nice combination of short and long holes. From the back tees forced carries can result in quite a few lost balls but from the correct yardage the additional challenge is rewarding.

1st rate

as someone from out of town (northeast) who visits Tucson once or twice a year I look forward to some challenging desert golf courses. This has risen from the dead ,far exceeding my expectations.I started playing here a few times back in 2006 great conditions. it fell into somewhat of a mess during our economic downturn , but kudos to the new mgmt company and the entire staff at Vistoso. It has turned around to become a first rate golf course once again. The entire staff especially, Janet and Robert in the food service department, great job!!

bring your A game.

What a driving course, beautifully framed.
Among the best. Hard to score, helpful
to improve your swing. The golf course is fair
but challenging, no blind shots.
If you don ' t mind shooting
above your handicap you will enjoy this test.
