Opened in late 2005, the Sonoran Course at the Omni Tucson National Resort is the polar opposite of its more famous sister course, the Catalina. Unlike Catalina, an older parkland course, the Sonoran is desert golf, designed by former Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman. Although it's more than 600 yards shorter than the 7,300-yard Catalina layout, it presents quite a challenge with its large bunkers and rolling terrain. The 15th, for example, is a par 5 that plays dramatically uphill, and the 17th is a par 3 perched alongside the mountains. There are also a couple of drivable par 4s, setting up interesting risk-reward opportunities.
